Picture015

It brings us great sadness to share that Toby Keith‘s longtime bass player and good friend, Carl “Chuck” Goff, Jr. The fifty-four year old passed away in Oklahoma on Wednesday, February 27th, after a motor vehicle accident.

Toby spoke out on his website regarding his friend:  ”We are deeply saddened by the sudden death of our band member, Chuck Goff. He was a close friend for over 25 years, the band leader and bass player. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family.”

Chuck Goff also lent a hand in writing some of Toby’s big hits, including “You Ain’t Much Fun” and “Upstairs Downtown” from the 1994 album “Boomtown”.

We extend our deepest condolences to Chuck Goff’s friends, family, and bandmates during this time. May his legacy live on through the relationships he built, the career he enjoyed, and the music he made.

Toby Keith takes over Texas

Toby Keith.

On Saturday, Feb. 9th, Toby Keith broke all attendance records for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.  Not only did he sell out the venue but it was the biggest crowd they have ever had since the event started in 1950.  Keith’s next performance stop will also be in Texas at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Feb. 25th.

And, as part of the Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Hall Of Fame Weekend, Toby Keith will be presented with an official certificate from the Office of the Governor hereby declaring Toby an Honorary Texan.  Other notable Honorary Texans include Bob Dylan, Russell Crowe, Bob Hope and many others. The event will take place on Sunday, March 3rd, at ACL Live at The Moody Theater. The superstar will deliver a special performance in honor of his most loved songwriters, Roger Miller.

Toby shares:

“Roger Miller was so intelligent that many of the greats would follow him around just for inspiration, just to hear him talk. He said some of the most famous quotes ever. If you want to hear cleverness, you want to hear wit, and you want to hear charm – you want to hear a ‘Class A’ songwriter, it’s Roger Miller.”

Toby Keith is preparing to put the hammer down on a new tour called, appropriately, the Hammer Down Tour. Presented by longtime partner Ford F-Series, the run begins on June 8 in Ozark, AR.  Joining him on this party is special guest Kip Moore.

Touring in support of his current album Hope On The Rocks, Keith will bring his acclaimed live show and its breakneck set list of hits, not the least of which is the album’s title track single, “Hope On The Rocks.”

VIDEO: Toby Keith – Hope On The Rocks

Just in case you missed it last week, Toby Keith‘s brand new music video for his title track new single “Hope On The Rocks” is out! The music video follows the stories of a few brand new characters – including one played by Toby! Check out the video below and let us know what you think about Toby’s latest offering:

REVIEW: Toby Keith – Hope On The Rocks

Toby Keith.

Toby Keith has had the kind of career that young artists dream of. He’s released nearly an album a year for the last twenty years, more than forty of his singles have charted on the Billboard Hot Country Songs, and twenty or so have hit Number One. He’s one of the top-earning country artists in the business, and seven years ago he transitioned to a new role and founded his own successful label.

“Hope On The Rocks” represents the eighth straight year he’s released an album, a streak that started with a personal favourite of mine, 2005’s Honkytonk University. The album opens with the title track, a downbeat number about those for whom a bartender doubles as therapist – “Where do they go?/They come here/to drown in their sorrow/and cry in their beer.” Keith has never been particularly acclaimed for non-party/non-patriotic songs, but this number proves, as did songs like “I Ain’t Already There“, that he’s fully capable of turning out great music of all tempos.

46th annual Country Music Association Winners

Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert. photo credit: Robert Evans.

There were a lot of surprises last night during the broadcast of the 46th annual Country Music Association (CMA) Awards. Some new artists were finally able to take home their first awards versus industry heavyweights, and a brand new king of country music was crowned. The award show was hosted for the fifth year by Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on ABC. Even as a voting member of the CMAs, some of the winners shocked me in the end. While most were my votes and who I wanted to win, there were a few that the rest of the industry did surprise me with.

The big names of the night were once again country’s supercouple Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton. After an emotional acceptance speech for Song Of The Year for “Over You,” they both made their way back up to the stage several times – for Male Vocalist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, and Blake taking home the big prize – Entertainer of the Year. Other notable, and just as surprised winners, were Hunter Hayes for New Artist of the Year, and Little Big Town finally taking home the Group of the Year award. Thompson Square emotionally accepted the award for Duo of the Year, also ending Sugarland’s streak of wins in that category.

Eric Church‘s “Chief” won Album of the Year, finally putting Miranda’s album of the year streak to an end.

See the full list of winners below and let us know how you did with your predictions. Do you agree with the industry?
