ACM Awards: Thompson Square Wins Vocal Duo

Thompson Square

Thompson Square received a huge surprise last night after performing at the ‘ACM Salute to the Military’ concert at the ACM Experience in Las Vegas.

After Keifer and Shawna Thompson completed their set, ACM CEO, Bob Romeo, presented them with the award for ‘Vocal Duo of the Year” …  a day early!

Thompson Square is the first duo besides Brooks and Dunn or Sugarland to win the ACM for ‘Vocal Duo’ since 1991. Since that time, Brooks & Dunn have won the ‘Vocal Duo’ award 16 times. The reigning duo winners, Sugarland, took home the trophy for 2010 and 2008. (In 1998 and 1999, the Dixie Chicks won the award when the category was combined with both duos and groups.)

While accepting the award, the duo was overcome with emotion:

Keifer : “It’s been a long, long road. This is one of the greatest nights of our lives. It’s hard to talk when you’re crying.”

Shawna: “This is a very bittersweet moment for me. More sweet than bitter. My dad passed away a month ago. This is for my dad.”

You can watch the video below of Shawna and Keifer accepting the award…

VIDEO: $#*! Thompson Square Says

thompson square

Let’s face it:  Lots of people have tried to make a “$#*! (Fill In The Blank) Says” video.  Most of them fail.  Miserably.

Then there’s Thompson Square.

If you’re needing a great laugh, then watch the video below.  Keifer and Shawna Thompson not only nail this, but they set the bar extremely high for any other country (or non-country)act to top.  We’re talking Mt. Everest high.  Really.  T2 is too funny.

But don’t take my word for it.  Be the judge for yourself. Watch the video and then let us know what you think in the comments section:

Shawna Thompson of Thompson Square Loses Father to Cancer

The female half of Thompson Square, Shawna Thompson, lost her father yesterday evening after battling cancer. Thompson Square’s management released this statement on their Facebook page today:

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Shawna Thompson’s father George Michael “Mickey” Mcllwain passed away yesterday evening in Alabama after a valiant battle with cancer. Shawna and her family were by his side when he passed. We ask that you please keep both Shawna and Keifer as well as Shawna’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. -t2team

Our thoughts and prayers are with Shawna and Keifer during this very difficult time.

Lady A’s “Own The Night” Owns The Top Spot — Again

Lady Antebellum.

Last Sunday Lady Antebellum’s “Own The Night” won the GRAMMY for “Best Country Album.”  Today we learned the album returned to the top spot on the Billboard Country chart.  The album has now been in the top spot for a total of 10 weeks since its release in September 2011.

Tonight Lady A brings their “On The Night World Tour” to Nashville, where more than 1,200 Country Radio Seminar attendees (including our boss lady!)  were invited to the sold-out show.

The tour, with special guests Thompson Square and Darius Rucker, continues this weekend with sold out shows in Detroit, MI and Evansville, IN.

Thompson Square’s “Glass” Breaks Top 40

thompson square

Thompson Square’s latest single, “Glass,” has broken into the Top 40, appearing at #40 on today’s Mediabase chart.  Rankings aren’t official until the end of the week, but by then you can bet it will have climbed a few more spots.

The song, written by Jon Nite and Ross Copperman, follows two huge releases by T2:  The chart-topping “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not?” and the Top 10 hit “I Got You.”   So far it appears “Glass” will be up to the task in following in the footsteps of those two Stoney Creek Records releases.  Time (and the charts) will tell.

“Glass” is certainly getting a spike from last week’s release of the video for song.  The stylish black and white video gives the beautiful ballad a bit of a classic feel.  Judge for yourself below.

VIDEO: Katie Armiger Honors Whitney Houston

katie armiger

Whitney Houston’s impact on the music world spread far beyond pop and R&B.  Country stars were also influenced by the Houston, who died this past Sunday.

A little proof of this was seen Monday night in Phoenix, AZ.  That’s where Katie Armiger (along with Thompson Square) was taking part in the KMLE “Partners In Hope Concert” benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  Armiger finished her set with her current single “Scream.”  But she topped it off with a tip of the hat to Houston, by mashing-up the song with the always stirring “I Will Always Love You.”  (Yes, it was originally Dolly Parton’s song but Whitney made it hers.)

The mash-up starts at about the 2:40 mark.  Two things to watch for:  1) the crowd’s reaction at the end of the song and 2) the percussionist on the right who really seems to be enjoying the moment!  (But then again, maybe he’s always that way…)

Thompson Square Debuts Video For “Glass”

Thompson Square has a special Valentine’s Day treat for us all:  The debut of the video for their new single “Glass.”

The beautiful ballad, which made it’s premiere today on CMT,  is the perfect play for today.  That’s not just because it’s coming to us from the loving husband and wife duo of Shawna and Keifer Thompson.  It’s because of the way the song is handled.  Shawna’s soft and delicate delivery are impactful without having to be forceful.  In addition, by going with black and white, the video has a classic, romanticized feel to it.

“Glass” is the latest release for the Stoney Creek Records recording artists.  It follows the chart-topping (and so far career-defining) “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not” and the Top 10 hit “I Got You.”  I predicted earlier (and I still stand by it) that this will be T2′s second number one song.  Time will tell on that.  For now, enjoy the video and Happy Valentine’s Day!
