TODAY IN HISTORY: Coal Miner’s Daughter Reaches Number One

Loretta Lynn.

Today in 1970, Loretta Lynn‘s “Coal Miner’s Daughter” finally reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart after almost eight months slowly climbing the charts. It held the spot for one-week. It also became Loretta’s first charting single on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 83. She later released an album of the same name in 1970, after only releasing the title track as a single. The single later served as the name for Loretta’s autobiography “Coal Miner’s Daughter: The Autobiography” in 1976, which she had co-wrote. It also served as the name of the movie autobiography based on her life “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

Loretta released a new version of “Coal Miner’s Daughter” in September 2010 with Sheryl Crow and Miranda Lambert. The trio performed it for the first time together on the 2010 Country Music Association awards. The trio version peaked on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart at #55 in December 2010 and appeared on Loretta’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Tribute To Loretta Lynn” album. On the release of this single, Loretta became the first female singer in history to release a single over six decades. This version of the song has been nominated for several awards, including CMA Musical Event Of The Year.

Sheryl Crow Found Out Underwear Incident From Her Dad

Sheryl Crow.

Viewers watching the CMT awards probably remember a few-seconds flash moment that made it past the filter. Sheryl Crow was singing with host Kid Rock on a stool, and when she went to get up off of it and showed the world her underwear. She recovered quickly and made a joke about it later on in the night about the Tweets she was getting about her ‘oops’ moment. When presenting the performance for Lady Antebellum’s “Just A Kiss,” Sheryl joked:

“People all over America are tweeting that I was wearing a really short skirt when I sang with Kid Rock and that when I got up off the stool, I showed my underwear.”

Sheryl told the listeners at KMPS radio that it was her Dad that told her about the incident originally. I wonder what that conversation was like!
