Reba McEntire Quits ACM Hosting Gig

Reba McEntire & Blake Shelton.

The Queen of country music is retiring from hosting the Academy of Country Music Awards. After a report surfaced earlier today, ACM CEO Bob Romero decided to put the rumors to rest and confirm that Reba McEntire will not return to co-host the award show next year. However, Blake Shelton will once again return – with something up his sleeve.

Bob shares:

“Reba has hosted the ACM Awards a record 14 times since 1986, and we fully understand and support her decision to focus her energies on her new television project, We’ve known about this for a while and have something very special planned with Blake returning—he’s got something big up his sleeve!—that we’ll be announcing soon. Stay tuned!”

Who do you think Blake will host with next year? Miranda Lambert? Trace Adkins? Sound off below and let us know who you think would be the perfect fit alongside the Oklahoma funnyman.

Reba McEntire Releasing New Single

Reba McEntire.

Great news for fans of country music’s queen, Reba McEntire. The country music icon announced on Twitter that she will be releasing a brand new single to country radio “soon.” While there isn’t any other information on the new music, it’s a return to radio while she’s starring in her latest sitcom “Malibu Country.” Here’s what Reba told a fan on Twitter last week:

What do you hope to hear from Reba? Are you hoping for something emotional like her version of “If I Were A Boy” or something you can dance to like “Turn On The Radio”? Let us know below!

After having huge country duets with Reba & Jason Aldean, it’s safe to say that Kelly Clarkson is country music’s favorite pop star. She’s also dabbled in the genre as a solo act, releasing a countrified version of her own hit “Mr. Know It All.” However, this week, she took to the stage on ABC’s Duets with her partner Jordan Meredith to pay homage to one of the reigning queens of country, Miranda Lambert. Both singers admit to being huge Miranda fans (who isn’t?!) and we think it’s safe to say that their duet of “Mama’s Broken Heart” would make Mrs. Shelton proud.

Check out Jordan and Kelly’s amazing performance right here, and catch Duets on ABC.

Big Machine and Clear Channel Announce Groundbreaking Agreement

2208459-2207259-Big-Machine-Clear-Channel

The Big Machine Label Group is home to such artists as Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts and Eden’s Edge on Big Machine Records, as well as Reba McEntire, Justin Moore, Brantley Gilbert, The Mavericks and Thomas Rhett on Valory Music Co. The group announced today that they are partnering with Clear Channel Media and Entertainment to align their business interests and accelerate growth and innovation in digital radio to the benefit of music fans and radio listeners everywhere.

Through this agreement, Big Machine (and its artists) will become the first record company to directly participate in Clear Channel’s terrestrial broadcast radio revenues.  For Big Machine Label President and CEO Scott Borchetta, it was a no brainer. Borchetta said, “In Clear Channel, I found partners who shared my big-picture view of how we could structure an agreement to benefit all involved. Not only does this partnership enable Big Machine to participate in terrestrial broadcast revenues, but we are also helping to grow digital radio – a great opportunity for all of us and a breakthrough opportunity for Big Machine artists.”

“Scott Borchetta has reinvented the music business in many important ways over the years, from distribution and artist development to promotion and advertising,” said Bob Pittman, Chief Executive Officer of Clear Channel. “Focusing that same creativity on how best to grow the music business, Scott has developed this new model with us to let his labels and artists participate in the revenue of broadcast radio immediately and in digital radio as it builds. This is a big step, but we think this investment is an opportunity worth taking to align our interests in all of our revenue streams and grow digital listening to its full potential with record labels and their artists as our partners. This landmark agreement creates a structure that makes sense for both our companies – but most of all for music fans.”

“Today, 98 percent of our listening is terrestrial broadcast and 2 percent digital – with record labels and artists only paid for the 2 percent,” said John Hogan, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Clear Channel Media and Entertainment. “This new agreement expands label and artist participation from just digital to terrestrial broadcast radio revenues in one comprehensive framework that will give all of us a great incentive to drive the growth of the digital radio industry and allow everyone to participate financially in its growth. This market-based solution helps bring the best in music to radio listeners wherever they want to hear it.”

Review: Duets – It Takes Two (Again)

duetsep2
Ladies and gentleman, it’s time to du-et again!

Our trusty host Quinoa is back to remind us how this show works. Except no one knows. What we do know is that a quartet of super talented ”superstars” (Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Jennifer Nettles & Robin Thicke) chose a bunch of moderately talented amateurs to sing with. The stars then score the performances on their mysterious judging tablets of doom and their partners’ faces appear on a Family Feud-esque leader board. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s start the show.

First up are Kelly Clarkson & Robin Thicke with a duet of the Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 track, “State of Shock.” Not gonna lie, this performance has me in a state of shock. I’m not sure if it’s the fact that John & Jennifer were left out, or if its Robin’s sleeveless V-neck and surprisingly lovely biceps, or the fact that lyrics to this song include the words “catatonic” and “supersonic”, but Krobin are getting a little too freaky for ABC. Seriously, Reba would not approve of this…and I think I’ve been impregnated through my television.

After a quick recap of last week that left Team Kelly at the bottom of the scoreboard and Team Jennifer’s J. Rome at the top, we’re ready to get to the “classic” duets.

Reba McEntire & The Band Perry Tour Updates

Reba McEntire.

With touring season kicking off for country music over the next few weeks, fans are marking down special dates in their calenders to travel to see some of their favorite artists.

While Reba McEntire might not be touring as much these days as she’s filming her new sitcom “Malibu Country,” country music’s Queen still has a busy enough schedule. With only a handful of dates set so far for 2012, she modified her tour schedule this morning to take out one Canadian date – her Ottawa, August 10th headlining date. See Reba’s tour dates here. The next tour date for the Oklahoma native is June 8th in Thackerville, OK.

The Band Perry, who are opening for Brad Paisley‘s “Virtual Reality Tour” also made a change to their tour calender today. The superstar sibling trio also no longer list their Ottawa date in support of Brad, which was scheduled for August 12th. The trio have a busy year ahead of them, and we’ll be at their fan club party next week at CMA Fest! Their next tour date in support of Brad is Friday night at Jones Beach, New York. They’ll also be making a stop on the TODAY show on Friday, so keep an eye on NBC in the morning to catch the group!

We’ll be at CMA Fest next week in Nashville – country music’s party of the year. What are you most looking forward to next week?

UPDATE: Terri Clark has also removed her Ottawa date from her tour page. She is now listed as part of the Boots & Hearts festival on the same date, August 12th. The Hoedown, however, still lists all acts – even Ronnie Dunn, whom we had confirmed exclusively has cancelled his date.

Review: Duets Four-Star Premiere

abc_duets

Although some of the show’s details were as well-guarded as Fort Knox (uh, insanely complicated judging system, I’m looking at you), ABC has been hyping its new singing competition “Duets” for weeks. By combining the superstar power of Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Jennifer Nettles (of Sugarland) and Robin Thicke, ABC was attempting to create the musical equivalent of Captain Planet’s Planeteers. With each superstar wearing their unique “ring,” they have the potential to combine to form a musical super force, evidenced by the show’s opening number of “Let Me Entertain You.” Clarkson brings a powerhouse voice and a uniquely unaffected charm, while Robin Thicke is the perfect combination of smug and sexy. Jennifer Nettles seems like the ideal next-door neighbor with her twangy drawl, but she’s a force to be reckoned with on stage, and John Legend mellows out the panel with his cool charm and smooth vocals.

The show quickly launched into the live music, focusing only a bit of time on the audition process, which seemed to be random and at the superstars’ discretion. Team Jennifer hit the stage first and although we may have snarked a bit over her partner J. Rome’s cheesy photo on ABC’s website, the New Jersey native proves to be a vocal powerhouse, shining alongside Nettles on the Sugarland song “Tonight.” The audience and the judges love it (a common theme of the evening) and the show is off with a bang. We’re only one performance in and I’m already convinced that ABC picked the perfect ambassador to make country music shine on this show with Jennifer Nettles.
