VIDEO: Keith Urban Invited To Join Grand Ole Opry

Keith Urban.

As we reported, Keith Urban will be the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry.  Urban’s invitation to join the Opry came during last night’s the “All For The Hall” benefit concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena that Urban was co-hosting.

Late in the show, concert co-host and Opry member Vince Gill called Urban out to the stage to present him with a gift.  Fellow Opry members Rascal Flatts, Diamond Rio and the Oak Ridge Boys also came out to share the moment.  Urban was presented with a large duffel bag.  Inside the bag was the Opry’s signature microphone stand.  As soon as Urban saw it, Gill announced Urban’s invitation to join the Opry.  (See Urban’s’ Opry invitation below.  Video courtesy Opry.com)

As reported on the Opry site, Urban’s invitation to join is a historic one.  Born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, Urban will be the first artist from outside North America to become an Opry member.  His formal induction into the Grand Ole Opry will be Saturday, April 21.

Again, our congrats to Keith!

Joe Bonsall Writes About The Super Bowl

Joe Bonsall of the Oak Ridge Boys.

It’s the biggest time of the year for any sports fan in North America this week. The Super Bowl takes place this weekend, and even country music’s latest Grand Ole Opry members the Oak Ridge Boys are taking part in the excitement. Joe Bonsall of the group shared his thoughts on this year’s match-up and his prediction for who will take home the title. Read what he had to say below and let us know if you agree:

Ban-Joey Football Blog…. The Super Bowl Shuffle

by Joseph S. Bonsall

With Super Bowl XLVI quickly approaching it is hard to imagine that Super Bowl XX, or 20 for you non-Latin speakers, was actually played twenty-six years ago on January 26, 1986, when the 1985 Super Bowl Shuffling Chicago Bears creamed the then-Bradyless, Steve Grogan New England Patriots, 46-10. The Oak Ridge Boys and our girls were all inside the Super Dome for this one and here is how it happened.

In 2012, there will be a ton of talk surrounding the 30th anniversary of The Oak Ridge Boys’ mighty1982 Cookin’ Tour, because it was the biggest country music arena tour of its day and age, featuring production that had never been seen before on a country stage. I, in fact, wrote a whole chapter on this magical piece of Oaks’ history in the book, An American Journey, in the chapter called Glory Days.

In actuality, the American Made Tour of 1983, the Deliver Tour of 1984, and the Step On Out Tour of 1985 did not take much of a back seat to the aforementioned Cookin’ Tour, because The Oak Ridge Boys were a hot commodity throughout the 80‘s and everything was going our way . . . hit records, big shows, cool stages and production, lots of pertinent television show appearances, and overall success at every level of the music business.

“I’ll Fly Away” Foundation Schedules Two Fundraisers

“I’ll Fly Away” is one of the most recognized songs that has provided comfort for millions around the world for the last 80 years.  Now “I’ll Fly Away” is poised to give hope for the next generation.

The I’ll Fly Away Foundation has been formed to educate our children as to the importance of our musical history through scholarships and musical education programs. The I’ll Fly Away Foundation believes music education is the key to the success of our preservation mission and will conduct demonstration tours to schools of all levels to educate the next generation about the musical heritage and traditions of America. The I’ll Fly Away Foundation is set to grant scholarships to qualified recipients in 2012.

The name I’ll Fly Away Foundation was taken from the world’s most recorded song, “I’ll Fly Away,” written by Albert E. Brumley in 1932.  Mr. Brumley was a pioneer of American Gospel music as well as Bluegrass and Country recordings.  The I’ll Fly Away Foundation is dedicated to educating the upcoming generations as to the importance of the old songs that shaped American Music into what it is today.

The Chairman of the I’ll Fly Away Foundation is Betsy Brumley, Albert E. Brumley’s granddaughter.  Betsy is following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather in recognizing that we must hold on to our roots of music and preserve it for the future.

At this time there are two fundraisers scheduled for 2012. March 24, 2012 in Neosho, Missouri featuring The Chuck Wagon Gang and on October 13, 2012 in Rogers, Arkansas featuring the Oak Ridge Boys, Daily & Vincent and The Blackwood Brothers Quartet.

If you are interested in becoming a Patron of the I’ll Fly Away Foundation or attending one of our fundraisers, please visit their website at www.illflyawayfoundation.org

Country Stars React To Oak Ridge Boys Opry Invitation

The Oak Ridge Boys.

Last night was another historic night at the Grand Ole Opry. The legendary Oak Ridge Boys were surprised by Little Jimmy Dickens wearing a beard just like member William Lee, who invited the group to be the newest members of the Opry in the middle of their performance last night. While the boys downplayed the moment to let it sink in overnight, the rest of the country music world didn’t let them get away that easily.

Here’s some of the best tweets from last night congratulating the group.

martinamcbride: Congrats to @OakRidgeBoys on being asked to join the Opry. I know you are thrilled and so are we!

blakeshelton: Congrats to the @oakridgeboys for being invited to join the Opry!! About time my friends…

DiamondRioBand: Congrats to our pals @oakridgeboys. Welcome to the @Opry family. Long over due boys

The Oak Ridge Boys are William Lee Golden, Joe Bonsall, Richard Sterban and Duane Allen. They will be officially inducted into the Opry on the August 6th show. Last year Blake Shelton was inducted into the Opry after becoming speechless and almost crying onstage when Trace Adkins surprised him with the invite.
