Review: Nashville – Music City Hits the Small Screen

Nashville-TV-Show-640

Saddle up, country fans, there’s a new rodeo in town and it hits your television screens every Wednesday night on ABC at 10:00pm ET/9:00pm CT. The new and highly anticipated “Nashville” stars Connie Britton and Hayden Panettierre as country music artists who come together, despite Britton’s character’s desire to keep her distance from that “brat.” Connie Britton plays Rayna Jaymes, a forty-something artist who is having trouble staying afloat as a newer generation, headed by Panettiere’s Juliette Barnes, starts to take over the country music scene. Picture a Faith Hill meets Reba McEntire when you think of Jaymes — attractive, stylish, unparalleled talent and success — and a street-walking Taylor Swift when you think of Barnes — young, fun, but overly flirtatious. Now that Jaymes has to contend with the fresh, young, new artists, her record label has recognized an obvious dip in her popularity. While Jaymes will tell you that she has gone triple platinum in the past, her record label isn’t interested in past successes and fears that if she does not make a drastic move — and fast — her career will take the Mindy McCreedy route (if you are asking “who?”, that is exactly my point). So, in a last-ditch effort to give Jaymes’ career a little bit of CPR, the record label recommends that Jaymes call it quits on her own tour and join forces with Barnes as her *gasp* opening act. Now picture this — Reba opens for Kellie Pickler. It’s on par with that. Naturally, Jaymes has no interest in being the pre-cursor to a little fiery country-singing Britney Spears, but something tells us she’s fighting a losing battle!

Like any other late-night primetime show, there also exists love, infidelity, family angst, and this serving comes with a heaping side of politics. What should you take away from episode 1 of this much-talked-about new show? Just because something seems a certain way on the outside, it doesn’t mean it is just that. Fame has its falls and behind every person who has his or her name in lights lies darkness. Nashville just allows us the opportunity to shine a flashlight on the dark side — at least as far as these fictitious superstars are concerned. Bottom line, this show has it all — glitz and glam, love and scandal, cute kids, and a killer cast. If you aren’t tuning in, we suggest you change that immediately, because we have a feeling it is going to be better than any eight-second ride!

Tune in next week for music, drama, political banter, and a glimpse of the streets of Nashville. And don’t forget to check back here every week for our weekly review as country music takes over television (as it should be).

Recap: The Voice – Episode 3: Boybanders, Mamas and Domo, Oh My!

Voice judges
First off, NBC, THREE nights in a row? I love Adam, Christina, Blake and CeeLo as much as the next person, but three in a row was a bit much.

Our first singer of the night is Samuel Mouton, a guy who cooks pizzas and washes dishes in Colorado, but hopefully not at the same time. He looks like a dirty skateboarding, short-haired Shaun White-type, but then opens his mouth and sounds like Bob Marley. It’s an odd disconnect as he sings “Redemption Song,” but Adam is the first to turn around, followed quickly by CeeLo and Christina. It’s an easy choice for Samuel, who joins Team Adam.

Next up is Chris Trousdale, a very pretty boy who was formerly a member of the boy band Dreamstreet. Don’t judge me, but I’m pretty sure I once saw Dreamstreet in concert. Anyway, Chris was basically the JC Chasez to Jesse McCartney’s Justin Timberlake. Unlike JC, however, his voice is surprisingly weak and shaky and we learn that he now works in a Sushi restaurant. Also, for a former boybander, he made a terrible song choice with “Glad You Came” by 2012 boy band, The Wanted. Although none of the judges turn around for Chris, he does get Blake Shelton on stage to “moonwalk” in his cowboy boots. I’m sure that Gif is all over Tumblr by now.

The Grammy Nominations Concert To Be Held in Nashville

grammy-awards-blizzard

Looks like Hollywood is turning a little country. On December 5th, Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN will host the Grammy Nominations Concert LIVE! on CBS. It’s the first time in its five year existence that the special is being held outside Los Angeles, which is something that The Recording Academy’s President and CEO Neil Portnow is pretty excited about:

“We are excited for the opportunity to bring ‘The Grammy Nominations Concert LIVE!’ to Nashville this year as we recognize our nominees for the 55th Annual Grammy awards. Nashville’s rich musical and cultural history is so important and vital to our industry, and indeed to the world — a fact The Academy has recognized for decades by locating one of our most thriving and active Chapters there. We look forward to celebrating the year in music in such a passionate, vibrant and flourishing city.”

The special is a new way for the Recording Academy to announce the nominees for the prestigious award show. Formerly, the nominees were announced through press releases from inside a hotel ballroom. The Recording Academy started the nominations concert as a way to get fans excited for the nominations and to renew interest in their award show.

Who do you hope to see nominated this year? Do you think country music has a shot at taking the major category awards?

VIDEO: Nashville on ABC

ABC has just announced that they’re adding a brand-new drama to its lineup this Fall. “Nashville” follows the story of country singer Rayna, played by Connie Britton, who is trying to save her declining career. She has been forced to open up the tour for new up-and-coming singer Juliett Barnes, played by Hayden Panettiere, and the conflict begins. Take a look at the trailer for the new show, which was filmed right in Nashville, and let us know what you think about a drama being based around Music City:

“Nashville” is Coming to ABC

ROBERT WISDOM, CHARLES ESTEN, CONNIE BRITTON, ERIC CLOSE, HAYDEN PANETTIERE, POWERS BOOTHE, SAM PALLADIO, CLARE BOWEN, JONATHAN JACKSON

With ABC upfronts in full-swing today and country music stars like Reba & Jennifer Nettles invading the network, ABC has announced a new fall drama centered around the goings-on of a country music legend and an up-and-coming crossover artist.

Connie Britton (“Friday Night Lights”) plays Rayna James, an accomplished country legend whose popularity is on the decline, while Hayden Panettiere (“Heroes”) plays Juliette Barnes, a new artist determined to take over the country charts. In an attempt to benefit both careers, Rayna’s record label pairs her with Juliette for a co-headlining tour, and from there, the drama ensues. Will Juliette be able to steal Rayna’s spotlight?

Look for Rayna’s wealthy, powerful and estranged father to add to the drama by helping Rayna’s husband, Teddy, seek a chance at the mayorship of Nashville against his wife’s wishes.

Produced by Callie Khouri (writer of “Thelma & Louise”), R.J. Cutler (“The September Issue”) & Steve Buchanan, look for “Nashville” to take viewers inside the world of country music and all of its entanglements, ranging from touring and romance to politics and familial drama.

Check out the trailer below and be sure to let us know what you think! Will you be tuning in to “Nashville”?

Kelly Clarkson Sings With Jason Aldean & Surprises Nashville Crowd

jason-aldean-kelly-clarkson-grammys-2012

Jason Aldean brought his My Kinda Party Tour to Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN Friday night, February 24, but this time he brought along a special guest. Throughout the tour, Lauren Alaina, one of Jason’s opening acts, normally returns to the stage to perform “Don’t You Wanna Stay” with him. Tonight, Kelly Clarkson made an appearance and sang with Jason while she was in town between her tour dates.

Clarkson surprised Jason by coming out on the side of the stage, as Lauren usually enters on the back of the stage on an elevator that comes up through the floor. Jason is all ready to welcome Kelly on the back of the stage, when the roar of the crowd gets loud and Jason still doesn’t see Kelly. Instead she took the side stage route, as her heels wouldn’t have worked well with the grates on the ramps of the stage. At the end of the video, you can see her pointing to her shoes before she leaves to give off why she came out on the side.

We have posted a video of the performance below, check it out! This song has been such a smash, we love seeing Kelly and Jason perform it together again and again!
