Lionel Richie Country Duets Album News

Music icon Lionel Richie will be releasing his country duets album “Tuskegee” on Mercury Nashville on March 27th. The record features his biggest hits with some of the top voices in country today and of the past.

Lionel teams up with Shania Twain, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, Sugarland‘s Jennifer Nettles, Blake Shelton, Rascal Flatts, Jason Aldean, Tim McGraw, Darius Rucker, Kenny Chesney, Billy Currington and Little Big Town on the record.

The Academy of Country Music will be taping an all-star tribute to Lionel Richie at the MGM Grand one day after the ACM Awards. The special will air later in the year on CBS.

“Tuskegee is where it all began, the place where I felt that everything was available and possible,” he says. “It’s where I learned about life and love and the power of music, and the place I built a musical foundation that knows no genres or boundaries.

“Doing this album was coming back to the beginning, back to basics, back to home,” he says. “The part of it I love the most is that the journey has been one of discovering myself. By the time I got back to Nashville, I clearly knew that the roots of my songwriting, my storytelling, were from the South.”

It’s been a journey to re-discover the hits that have made Lionel the music icon that he has become today.

“Every Lionel Richie song that I can think of I had a personal experience with – high school homecomings, proms, you name it,” says Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts, who duets on “Dancin’ On the Ceiling.” “Lionel was always playing in my house. His music always said what we felt and couldn’t express.”

Lionel Richie has just been announced as the latest performer at the CMA Awards on November 9th. He’ll be previewing songs with Darius Rucker, Little Big Town and Rascal Flatts from his upcoming country duets album “Tuskegee.”

Lionel will release his album in March, which features some of country music’s hottest stars turning Lionel’s greatest hits into county duets. “I was born and raised in Tuskegee, Alabama. I am a country boy and proud of it. To do this project just felt natural,” says Richie.

“Growing up with country, R&B, gospel, and classical music from my grandmother and pop, Tuskegee was the perfect melting pot for my influences as a writer,” he says, “and the title, Tuskegee, is a validation of my growing up there—the place I call home.”

Lionel Richie Releasing Country Duets Album in October

Lionel Richie.

Lionel Richie is planning on releasing a country duet album, titled “Tuskegee,” in October. Named after his Alabama home-town, the album will feature stars like Sugarland, Blake Shelton, Rascal Flatts, Willie Nelson, and Tim McGraw, and even Shania Twain. His country music friends will sing new duet version of Richie’s top hits.

Richie told Boston.com that he has been a member of the Country Music Association since the 80’s. He feels that there is a very small line between the country music genre and R&B.

Country music is pop music today with new country [artists like] Rascal Flatts and Jennifer Nettles [of Sugarland]. I’d been a member of the Country Music Association for the last 30 years but I didn’t pull that trigger because I figured “I’ll stay in pop and R&B.’’ But the truth of the matter is I’ve been a member of country music since the early ’80s. I always tell people there’s a very thin line between country and R&B, between “take this job and shove it’’ and “oh baby don’t leave me.’’ The stories are the same and they’re real stories. This album that I’m doing right now is a duets album with all of the country artists singing my songs.
