Keepin’ It Country’s Top Albums of 2013

Although everyone on our staff loves country music, we have different tastes and don’t always agree. For this reason, we didn’t compile a comprehensive list of our favorite collective country albums of the past year. Instead, some of our staff picked their individual faves. Make sure to let us know your faves of 2013!

Jen’s Picks:

Cassadee PopeFrame By Frame: I am admittedly one of those music lovers who listens to an album the first time and is simply incapable of forming an opinion. No matter how much I love the artist, I sit there with a blank stare after the first spin. So, in all fairness to the artist, I listen again. That was my experience with Frame By Frame. I listened the first time, and the true stand outs to me were, the already loved, “Wasting All These Tears,” “Easier to Lie,” “I Wish I Could Break Your Heart,” and “11.” And for me to find four songs I like in the first spin is pretty impressive. In subsequent attempts to listen to Frame By Frame, I have found myself loving every track and even using Cassadee’s debut country album to accompany me during long, tedious runs to help the time go by. Each track exemplifies Cassadee’s gorgeous vocals, versatility, and incredible range. Give it a whirl … you will be begging for more from this CRS New Face!

Kellie Pickler Spends Holidays on USO Tour

Kellie Pickler USO Tour

We know Kellie Pickler is awesome, but then she does something like this and we are reminded just how awesome she truly is.

The country star spent the holidays in the Middle East with our troops on another USO tour, marking the seventh USO tour for Pickler.

Her nine-day tour was part of the USO’s “Every Moment Counts” campaign. The campaign was launched to bring appreciation and awareness to the everyday moments that our troops and their families miss. Visit www.USOmoments.org to send a thank-you to our servicemen and women, and find out how you can help.

Pickler tweeted: “Not every Christmas do you get 2 fist bump a soldier while hanging your feet off the back of a Chinook in Afghanistan.”

Thank-you is really not enough for our troops’ service and sacrifice, but we will still say it…. THANK-YOU!

And thank-you to Kellie Pickler for spending Christmas overseas and helping to bring them some joy and a bit of home.

Kellie Pickler Records New Christmas Song

Kellie Pickler Christmas

There’s a new song to add to your Country Music Christmas collection.

Kellie Pickler has recorded the Christmas song, “The Man With The Bag.” The tune was co-written by Harold Stanley, Irving Taylor, and Dudley Brooks, and made popular by Kay Starr in the 1950s. Several artists have covered the song throughout the years, and Pickler has now given us her take on it.

“The Man With The Bag” will be available for download on November 25th! We love all things Pickler so we can’t wait. Here is the iTunes link: https://itunes.apple.com/nz/album/the-man-with-the-bag-single/id735078454.

REVIEW: Kellie Pickler’s “The Woman I Am”

It’s hard to believe that Kellie Pickler was once just another country singing contestant on American Idol. Since her days of trying to impress Simon Cowell and being confused by calamari, Kellie has charmed the music industry with tons of accolades, won Dancing with the Stars, crisscrossed the country on huge tours and released three successful albums.

On November 11, Pickler will release her fourth studio album, The Woman I Am. The release marks her first album with new label, Black River Entertainment. The album clings close to her musical roots of traditional country with hints of today’s hottest trends. Produced by Frank Liddell and Luke Wooten, it’s sure to appease long-time Pickler fans while also winning over a ton of new ones.

Country fans have already heard two of the album’s 13 tracks, the punchy album opener “Little Bit Gypsy” and the heartfelt closing ballad “Someone Somewhere Tonight.” In between, the album takes listeners on an impressive journey through cheating, falling in love, forgiveness and vulnerability.

Track #2, the sassy “Ring for Sale” (co-written by Chris Stapleton and Jim Beavers) is a tongue-in-cheek ode to a cheating lover. This isn’t your typical woman scorned song, but tells the tale of a cheating fiancée and his resourceful ex, who plans to make a pretty penny from selling the ring. “Act right now before he finds out,” Pickler sings, “And I’ll throw in the dress for free.”

The musical journey continues with the swinging vibe of “Buzzin’” before venturing into the ballad territory with the album’s title track, “The Woman I Am.” The track, co-penned by Pickler and her husband, Kyle Jacobs, is a definite standout on the album, an ironic mix of confidence and vulnerability that laments the duality of a woman. “Sometimes I cry at night, fall to pieces with Patsy Cline,” Pickler laments, “Man, I miss songs like that, that’s just the woman I am…”

As the album continues, we fall in love with “Closer to Nowhere” before paying homage to Pickler’s spitfire of a great grandma, “Selma Drye.” Another highlight comes in the form of “I Forgive You,” as Pickler admits there’s “no whiskey to numb the pain” before coming to the realization, “Only one thing left for me to do, I forgive you.”

As the album winds down, there’s the fun and flirty “Bobbie and Clyde,” the rousing “No Cure for Crazy” and “Tough All Over,” which once again hits on Pickler’s vulnerable side. Consider this track Part 2 to “The Woman I Am.”

If you’re already a Kellie Pickler fan, this album will remind you why you fell in love with the singer. If you’ve been on the fence about Pickler in the past, this album should win you over with its diversity, touching vulnerability and true country sound.

One thing is for certain, after listening to The Woman I Am, we feel like we know Kellie Pickler for the woman she is.

Kellie Pickler Helps GMA Go Pink

Kellie Pickler

Kellie Pickler appeared on Good Morning America earlier today to help kick off “GMA Goes Pink” in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

By her side this morning was one of Kellie’s best friends, Summer. Summer was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, and Kellie had joined her friend in shaving her head in support and solidarity. Over a year later, we are so happy that Summer is doing well now. Kellie posted on her Facebook page that Summer has a few rounds of chemotherapy left, but is cancer free! Amazing news… stay strong, Summer!

Breast Cancer awareness is a cause near and dear to my heart. My amazing mom passed away from this terrible disease in July so this is all very personal to me.

Kellie is and always has been a class act, and she has all of our respect. Thank-you Kellie and GMA for helping to bring awareness!

Watch Kellie’s GMA appearance and performance of “Someone Somewhere Tonight” below. The song will be included on her new album, The Woman I Am, which drops on November 11th.

For all of the Breast Cancer fighters and survivors out there, you are amazingly strong & keep fighting!
