VIDEO: Pistol Annies Alert — Surprise Performance in Kentucky!
“Surprise, Kentucky!”
That’s what Miranda Lambert told the crowd last night in Lexington, Kentucky when she brought the Pistol Annies out on stage with her. The crowd went crazy as Lambert. Angaleena Presley and Ashley Monroe approached their microphones. After soaking it all in for a moment, the trio launched into their hit song “Hell On Heels.” (See the upper-deck fan video below.)
The Annies clearly enjoyed being back in the spotlight. Ashley Monroe (aka Hippie Annie) posted their thanks on the group’s Facebook page:

The performance marked the first Pistol Annies concert sighting since December when the trio played a trio of sold-out headlining shows. Their appearance not only gave the crowd some added excitement, it also probably gave Lambert a boost. The show at Rupp Arena was Lambert’s ninth in a span of only 11 days. That long run of her “On Fire Tour” covered more than 4,000 miles.
“Hell On Heels” Goes Gold; One Annie to Get Inked
The Pistol Annies have gone gold. The trio’s single “Hell On Heels” reached gold status with more than 500,000 digital downloads. That milestone means a permanent marking for one member of the trio.
Ashley Monroe (Hippie Annie) posted a message thanking fans and also alerting us all to a promise made by Angaleena Presley (Holler Annie):
“Thanks SO much for making “Hell on heels” gold! holler ( only tattoo virgin in group) said she’d get inked if that happened. :) ? hippie”
No word yet from the still ink-free Angaleena as to what type of tattoo she’ll be getting. Miranda Lambert (Lone Star Annie) already has the guns and wings thing covered with her tattoo. We’ll have to wait and see if Angaleena follows suit.
One thing don’t have to wait much longer for is new music from the Pistol Annies. Their “Run Daddy Run” will be appearing on the Hunger Games Soundtrack, which will be released on March 20th.
Spend Valentine’s Day With Mitzi Dawn
If you’re looking for something a little different to do this Valentine’s Day (or you just want to avoid the whole thing altogether), might we recommend spending that night with Mitzi Dawn? For those in the Nashville area, we mean that literally. For everyone else, we mean it virtually.
We’re not talking about a date or anything like that, but we are talking about a party — the release party for Mitzi Dawn’s independent Trainwrecks and Pink Clouds album. The event will be from 6:30pm – 8:00pm (CT) on Valentine’s Day at The Rutledge (410 4th Ave S.) in Nashville. If you can’t make it in person, you can still take part in the party. The event will be streaming live as part of The Billy Block Show. You may access the free, online stream of the show by visiting The Billy Block Show Website.
“If you’re in the Nashville area on Tuesday, come celebrate with me! I’ll play for 40 minutes with a full band. We’ll play my record top to bottom,” she says about the party that is quickly becoming a family affair. “My fiancé will be on stage and my son, Brandon, will be in the audience. My other son, Shane, will be watching the live stream online (I’ll send him an “I love you!”) along with, hopefully thousands of people around the world that can’t be here.”

Music Video
This week’s music video is the Pistol Annie‘s hit first single, “Hell on Heels.” The Annies sure were a surprise this year, but what an awesome surprise they were. “Hell on Heels” is one of my favorite songs of the year and Miranda Lambert, Angaleena Presley, and Ashley Monroe’s voices blend so well together. They are the perfect country trio.
Live Performance
This week’s live performance pick is Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson performing their cross-over mega hit “Don’t You Wanna Stay” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “Don’t You Wanna Stay” was definitely one of the biggest and best songs of 2011 as well as one of my favorites. Aldean and Clarkson made great duet partners, and the song earned them a nomination for “Best Country Duo/Group Performance” at the upcoming 54th Grammy Awards.
Cover Song
Taylor Swift is pretty much unstoppable. She had another huge year and wrapped up her widely successful “Speak Now World Tour.” As you probably know, Swift performed a cover song by a hometown artist in most cities along the tour run. When she stopped in Philly, she did a mash-up of Pink’s “Who Knew” and TLC’s “Unpretty.” It was one of my favorites from the whole tour. What was your favorite? Pistol Annies Plan To Be Around For A Long Time
“We all have something to say as individual women and as individual artists,” Miranda Lambert said of herself, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley. “You put all three opinions together and all three lifestyles and what we’ve all been through, and it just felt like that we were saying something that most people think and don’t actually say. I’m like that in my solo career. I take risks and I’m honest in my music and we just carried it out with this Pistol Annies project.”
“All three of us have different influences, but they all three have the same characteristic—honesty,” Monroe added. “Miranda loves Merle (Haggard). I love Dolly and Angaleena loves Loretta. We’re all very much inspired by the three of them. If you go back and listen to their records, you can relate to what they’re talking about.”
Although record companies sometimes encourage artists into collaborations that look commercially promising, that was not the case with The Pistol Annies. “Miranda and I have known each other for seven years,” said Monroe. “One night we were at her house and I asked if she’d ever heard of Angaleena Presley. I’d written with her a few times in Nashville. She said she hadn’t, so I went and got my computer and started playing her some stuff. She flipped out. She said, ‘That’s the girl! That’s our missing link!’ It fell together as easy as that.”
Presley said the collaboration felt natural from the beginning. “We sat down and wrote these songs and we didn’t overthink it,” she said. “We didn’t have any method to the madness. It’s just songs from three different girls’ perspectives and I guess a lot of people can relate to it.”
Pistol Annies Second Single?
In our exclusive interview with Angaleena Presley of the Pistol Annies, we asked her if there would be a chance for a second single from the trio’s debut album “Hell On Heels.” In the same interview, she admitted that the Annies were testing the grounds last week with their first-ever three headlining dates to see if there was a real interest in the group for a possible future tour. She says that the group will make it’s touring return in May at festivals.
Angaleena says that there was discussion about a possible second single from the album:
“Not sure,” she tells Keepin’ it Country. “We’re talking about it and Miranda’s kind of out doing her thing right now for “Four The Record.” She kind of has to turn around and back into her, you know, turn back into Miranda Lambert for a while. She just put her record out, and she’s going to tour for the Winter and early Spring then we’ll be back out in May to do a bunch of festivals and stuff.”
When asked what her pick would have to be for a second single, she admits it’s one of the fan favorites:
“Well, I’m a little biased but I would totally pick “Lemon Drop.” I wrote that song and just feel like, you know, a lot of women can relate to that song. Maybe even men can relate to it. It’s about just getting by and keeping the faith, and knowing that someday all this hard work is going to pay off. I like the message in that song.

CONCERT REVIEW: Pistol Annies — Stripped Down and Fired Up
The Pistol Annies played their first-ever solo show Saturday night at the Las Vegas House of Blues. The trio (Angaleena Presley, Ashley Monroe and Miranda Lambert) admitted to being nervous. It could’ve been because it was their first headlining concert. Or it could’ve been because they chose to strip things down and make it an acoustic show. It turns out the only thing they needed to worry about was having enough room for all of their fired-up fans.
Pistol Annies Sell Out Hollywood House Of Blues
The Pistol Annies have been an interesting group to watch this year. The all-female trio, made up of best friends Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley, have been an experiment of sorts based on fan reaction. The girls first started recording their album “Hell On Heels” together without a recording contract in place, and even performed on Miranda Lambert’s “The Revolution Continues” tour this year to see how response would be. Their album, originally a digital-only release, debuted at #1.
In our interview with Angaleena Presley, she admitted that the three headlining shows of the Pistol Annies were yet another experiment by the group to see if they should add more tour dates as a trio next year. If ticket sales to their 3-date House Of Blues tour, which starts tonight, are any indication… we should see a Pistol Annies tour next year. Their Hollywood date on December 7th is sold-out, and has been for quite some time.
The Pistol Annies will perform at their first award show Monday night at FOX’s American Country Awards. Our very own Jessica Crans and Ted Efron will be on the red carpet and backstage at the show, and will be giving you the latest scoop from your favorite artists. They’ll also be making it out to the first Pistol Annies headlining show tonight and will have a review up tomorrow.

Pistol Annies Heading Out On The Road
The Pistol Annies are heading out on the road for a small headlining tour of their own over the next few days. Ashley Monroe, Angaleena Presley and Miranda Lambert will appear at a handful of club shows for the first time as a trio. Our very own Ted Efron and Jessica Crans will be at the Las Vegas show and will report back on the trio’s headlining performance next week.
