Country songs for Memorial Day

Country artists may just be the most patriotic out of any genre of music. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that if we were to put together a list of every country song that pays tribute to the military, that we’d have a never ending playlist. With tomorrow being Memorial Day in the United States, we wanted to put together a list of country songs that can help fans remember what this holiday is all about. From artists that perform for USO troops serving overseas, to artists who have hit singles with a remembrance theme, we put together our list for a 2013 memorial day playlist. Our picks aren’t in order.

Check out our picks below and let us know what songs you’ll be listening to for the rest of the weekend.

AMERICAN SOLDIER – TOBY KEITH

Originally released in November 2003 as a single from his album “Shock’n Y’all.” The song was a co-write by Toby with Chuck Cannon and became a number one hit on the Billboard U.S. Hot Country Songs Chart for four weeks. It was inspired by the times Toby had met USO troops serving overseas, and he wanted to find a way to show his support for them and their families. The video was directed by Michael Salomon and filmed at an actual US Air Force Base in Edwards, California with off-duty soldiers, reservists and their families.

Exclusive Interview: Introducing Angel Mary & the Tennessee Werewolves

angel-mary-tennessee-werewolves

When I spoke to Angel Mary & the Tennessee Werewolves, they were amidst a radio tour in Paris, Texas. They were also in search of the Eiffel Tower wearing a cowboy hat. Believe it or not, shortly after our interview, they Tweeted a pic that they had found it.

Although this may sound silly, it’s a perfect anecdote about this family band, a determined, but fun-loving group determined to make their dreams come true. Whether those dreams involve finding the Texan Eiffel Tower or making great music, they’re well on their way.

Big & Rich Select Four Directors For Four Videos

Big & Rich.

Country music duo Big & Rich personally selected four different music video directors for four tracks off of their new album “Hillbilly Jedi.” Each director was challenged with only a week to finish their projects and with a very small budget to make it happen. They were challenged to be as creative as possible, and to show off each of their own visions to the tracks. The four directors given the challenge were the Edde Brothers, Ryan Hamblin, Kip Kubin, and Jeff Venable.

The four tracks chosen for the challenge are “Party Like Cowboys,” “Born Again,” “Lay It All On Me,” and “Cheat On You.” All directors were given total freedom by Big & Rich to complete their projects. The videos will premiere on CMT will “Hillbilly Hijack” on Friday, October 5th at 10 am CST.

ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp just concluded a week in Nashville with campers from across America participating in various activities and excursions around Nashville. The Camp has two purposes: a study of Williams syndrome and other developmental disabilities and providing music enrichment through performance and education.

The camp featured a Monday songwriting session led by Brett Eldredge and David Lee Murphy, who led campers in a songwriting session, creating “We’re Having a Party,” an original song based on campers’ personal experiences and inspirations.

Later in the week, on Thursday, Jana Kramer stopped by the Vanderbilt campus for a cookout and sing-a-long. The camp wrapped on Friday at the Grand Ole Opry with a performance from Big & Rich. Additionally, the campers performed “We’re Having a Party.”

Check out the photos from this incredible week!

Top 10 Country Songs for Memorial Day

Tim McGraw.

Us here at Keepin’ it Country want to wish our American friends a happy Memorial Day weekend. We also want to thank all those who have, will, or currently are serving their countries overseas. The sacrifices that have been made, and will be made, by the men and women serving their countries will never be forgotten. Even as a Canadian, I still want to thank everyone for what they’ve done protecting freedom not only in the United States today, but around the world.

While there are tons of songs in country music that pay tribute to the troops, we had the difficult task of narrowing it down to just our top ten. Take a look at our top 10 playlist for Memorial Day and let us know what your favorite songs for tribute are on our Facebook page or in the comments to our post.

John Rich & Friends Benefit Announced

John Rich.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and John Rich have announced the return of the John Rich & Friends Concert. This year’s benefit show will take place on June 5th in Memphis, Tennessee’s Cannon Center. The line-up is a pretty big one, with expected guests Darius Rucker, Kellie Pickler, Big & Rich and Jeff Foxworthy. The event is the kick-off to 2012′s Fedex St. Jude Class golf tournament.

St. Jude is celebrating their fiftieth anniversary this year, and the hospital aims to provide exceptional health care to children who are fighting cancer. What makes St. Jude unique is that they believe that no child or family should have to pay for treatment while battling the disease. It’s something that John believes strongly in:

“St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital holds a very special place in my heart, that’s why I’m excited to kick off the Fedex St. Jude Classic with the John Rich & Friends concert. I don’t know how you could spend your time any better on this earth than to support something like St. Jude. It’s truly God’s work – taking care of them babies.”

St. Jude is planning an entire week of events during the golf classic to help support the hospital.

ABC is putting together one heck of a sound track for their newest television series, “GCB.” The show follows the story of Texan Queen Bee Amanda Vaughn, (played by Leslie Bibb), who returns home after 20 years, but there’s a little payback for the original mean girl of the town. Will she be welcomed back with open arms, or will her town preach her the golden rule while stabbing her in the back? Everything’s always bigger in Texas… including the drama! The show is based off of the book “Good Christian Bitches” by Kim Gaitlin.

While the sound track for the show isn’t available until May 8th on Elektra Nashville, fans will get the chance to preview a new song each week on iTunes. Star Kristin Chenoweth (who plays Carlene Cockburn) contributes three tracks to the compilation album, including a duet with co-star Miriam Shor on the classic “This Little Light Of Mine”. Other artists featured on the super-star CD include John Rich of Big & Rich, the JaneDear Girls, Emily West, Dean Alexander, Damien Horne, Joanna Cotten, Don Derby, Jaime Hanna, and Bum Steers.
