Billy Currington dropped by NASCAR race

billycurrington

Things are starting to get a little worse for Billy Currington. After news that he was indicted on making terroristic threats towards a charter boat captain who had passed by his dock, NASCAR has announced that he will be replaced by Josh Turner at the Sprint All-Star Race. The line-up change was made official on Friday morning. The race and concert was scheduled for May 18th, and officials chose to go with the South Carolina native as Billy’s replacement.

Marcus Smith, President and general manager of the Charlotte Motor Speedway, said:

“Due to Currington’s recent indictment, we elected to change our act for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.”

Billy had turned himself in to authorities on April 15th after he was indicted. He posted bail a few hours later in Savannah, Georgia. His indictment also included an elder abuse charge as the boat captain is over 70 years old.

When local firefighters saved Troy native Curtiss Shaver’s life during a tragic farming accident, Shaver knew he found his calling. Even though he lost the lower part of his left leg in the accident, he was as determined as ever to become a life-long firefighter and EMT for the region. In a special event this week at Troy Fire Station No. 1,  a ceremonial yard of bricks was revealed to recognize Shaver as winner of Crown Royal’s “Your Hero’s Name Here” program.

The national contest renames the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMA) on July 29th after a deserving American hero. In an effort to bring a little bit of the famous track to Troy, Alabama, Crown Royal organized a special ceremony that resulted in the laying of a replica “Yard of Bricks” in Troy’s downtown. The final, engraved brick was put down by Shaver himself.

Nearly 200 Troy residents, including the city’s mayor, were at the ceremony outside the Fire Station on East Walnut Street. It wasn’t only locals who were there – but country music star Justin Moore performed a short set in Shaver’s honor. He performed “Small Town USA” and “‘Til My Last Day” for Shaver and the community during the brick laying.

“It was an honor to come to Alabama on this special day to pay homage to Curtiss,” said Moore. “He truly embodies the all-American hero and I am glad I got to be a part of this historical celebration. We will have a great time in Indy for the Curtiss Shaver 400.”
