Country songs for Memorial Day

Country artists may just be the most patriotic out of any genre of music. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that if we were to put together a list of every country song that pays tribute to the military, that we’d have a never ending playlist. With tomorrow being Memorial Day in the United States, we wanted to put together a list of country songs that can help fans remember what this holiday is all about. From artists that perform for USO troops serving overseas, to artists who have hit singles with a remembrance theme, we put together our list for a 2013 memorial day playlist. Our picks aren’t in order.

Check out our picks below and let us know what songs you’ll be listening to for the rest of the weekend.

AMERICAN SOLDIER – TOBY KEITH

Originally released in November 2003 as a single from his album “Shock’n Y’all.” The song was a co-write by Toby with Chuck Cannon and became a number one hit on the Billboard U.S. Hot Country Songs Chart for four weeks. It was inspired by the times Toby had met USO troops serving overseas, and he wanted to find a way to show his support for them and their families. The video was directed by Michael Salomon and filmed at an actual US Air Force Base in Edwards, California with off-duty soldiers, reservists and their families.

Carrie Underwood and her mom.

Us here at Keepin’ it Country want to wish all the moms out there a happy Mother’s Day! Just in case you’re looking for a playlist of songs to help celebrate the weekend with your Mom, we’ve put together a list of some of our favorite country songs about moms. Take a listen to our list below and let us know what YOUR picks are for mother’s day.

MAMA’S SONG – CARRIE UNDERWOOD

A personal song written by Carrie herself to her mom is our first pick for our Mother’s Day playlist. The music video features Carrie and her real life mom, as pictured to the side of this post, on her wedding day as she tells her mom that she doesn’t need to worry about her daughter, because she learned from her. “Mama’s Song” was the fourth single from Carrie’s “Play On” album, which was co-written by Carrie with Luke Laird, Kara DioGuardi, and Marti Frederikson. BONUS: The video also features Carrie’s real-life husband, Mike Fisher.

Videos of the Week – May 30th

Gloriana.

It’s that time of the week again where we here at Keepin’ it Country start browsing through YouTube to find three of our favorite videos to share with our readers this week. Our Videos of the Week segment includes three videos, one music video of the week, one cover of the week by a favorite artist, and one live performance of the week. Check out our picks for the week of May 30th and share your favorites with us and you might see them on next week’s edition!

MUSIC VIDEO OF THE WEEK:

Gloriana(Kissed You) Goodnight

This has been a song stuck in my head since Warner Music played it for us at the CRS Luncheon with Faith Hill back in February. It’s one of those music videos that actually follows the story of the song, and it flows pretty nicely. It’s a pretty song with the perfect video production, and for that it’s our video pick of the week for music video. Check out “(Kissed You) Goodnight” and let us know what you think:

EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Jenny & Ashley

jenny&ashley

This past week, we caught up with country/pop duo Jenny & Ashley while out on the road in California. They spent last year touring summer camps, festivals and middle schools, making TV appearances and singing the national anthem at ballparks. Now it’s time to see what they’re up to this year! See what these two teenage stars had to say about staying grounded, writing, what it was like to record with Tim McGraw’s co-producer Darran Smith, who they would love to go on tour with, some of their favorite fan encounters, funny stories on the road, and a little get to know them better session!

For some of our readers who might not know much about you, can you tell us a little bit about yourselves?

Jenny: Absolutely! We were born in Wisconsin and we always loved to sing!  We would sing in our backyard, to our neighbors, then our dad got a job transfer out to California right around the time we were 7 and 9. We started doing acting and everything in LA, and we just loved the entertainment business so much. We fell in love with country music so that took us out to Nashville. We also love writing music. In Nashville we’ve been pursuing things for about 2 years now as Jenny & Ashley. Our dad works in Miami so we’re between the two places.

Ashley: And we’re sisters! I’m 14 almost 15 and Jenny is 16. Ever since then we’ve been pursuing our county music dream and just seeing where it takes us!

Video Picks Of The Week: March 13, 2012

Matt Nathanson & Ashley Arrison

Hi friends…

It’s time for our “Video Picks of the Week.”

Music Video

This week’s music video is Jack Ingram, “Lips Of An Angel.” The song was originally sung and made popular by the rock band, Hinder. Ingram later gave the song his own spin and earned himself a country hit with his version. The track served as the lead single off of his album, This is It.

I have always enjoyed Ingram’s version and it introduced me to his music back in 2006.

Here is his website: http://www.jackingram.net/.

VIDEO: Kelly Clarkson Covers Shania Twain

Kelly Clarkson - Jessica Crans Photography

Kelly Clarkson has always had a special bond with her fans, and has involved them in her career since the beginning. After all, Clarkson and her fans have literally been together since she first stepped on the American Idol stage back in 2002. The multi-Grammy award winner is currently on the road, and takes the time to acknowledge the fan support at each tour stop by thanking them for voting for her and being with her the last 10 years.

Throughout the Stronger Tour, the powerhouse singer has been taking fan requests via Twitter. Every show, she picks a different request to perform. Alternating between her own songs and covers, she paid homage to Shania Twain by performing “You’re Still The One” at her tour stop in Windsor, Ontario last week. Of course, Clarkson and her band did a beautiful job with the song.

We love the fan request idea, and it has given us some amazing covers from KC.

The Stronger Tour is a must see! For tour dates and information visit: www.kellyclarkson.com.

PS: It is not a country cover, but Kelly did a fantastic cover of Paramore’s “The Only Exception” over the weekend. Check it out here: http://youtu.be/44YuCZIPmjw

Video Picks Of The Week: March 5, 2012

Brantley Gilbert

Hello friends…

We are back with our “Video Picks of the Week.”

Music Video

Brantley Gilbert is one of my new favorites. He’s the perfect mix of country and rock, and I love the tone of his voice and overall vibe.

Brantley was signed to Valory Music Group in 2011, and you definitely know him for his songwriting skills as well. Most notably, he has written songs for Jason Aldean and Colt Ford. He was a co-writer on “Dirt Road Anthem” and “My Kinda Party,” both of which were eventual mega-hits for Aldean.

This week’s pick is Brantley’s music video for his single, “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do.” The track is the second single off of his album “Halfway To Heaven.” The album is available on iTunes!

EXCLUSIVE: Interview with RaeLynn From “The Voice”

RaeLynn

Will the first one picked be the last one standing on NBC’s The Voice?  That’s a storyline country singer RaeLynn would love to see play out.

It’s been a little more than three weeks since the 17-year-old made a super splash immediately after the Super Bowl.  The native of Baytown, Texas led off the show’s second season by landing a spot on Blake Shelton’s team (turning down a chance to work with Adam Levine).  Blake tried to entice her to join his team by telling the teen, “I can make you a country star.”  He pretty much had her from the moment he turned his chair, which was a feat in itself as she bravely chose to sing a song by her inspiration and Blake’s wife, Miranda Lambert.

RaeLynn may be one of the youngest members of Team Blake, but that doesn’t mean she’s inexperienced.  She’s part of a large, musically inclined family (she has seven brothers and sisters) and has been performing for most of her life.  Two of her cousins are in the GRAMMY-nominated progressive worship band, “Leeland.”  As for her own career, she spent a lot of time in summer school, allowing her to finish high school two years early so she could try her hand at acting.  But it turned out that her life in L.A. had her leaning back toward music.

Now she’s back in the business with her eyes on the prize.  That includes competing on The Voice and beyond.

We have to start by asking about your blind audition.  Last season, two singers sang a Miranda Lambert song and both times Blake didn’t turn his chair.  Yet, you started the whole show by singing “Hell On Heels,” her hit with the Pistol Annies.  Were you confident, crazy or both?

Video Picks Of The Week: February 12, 2012

Reba & Kelly

Hey country music friends…

It’s time for our “Video Picks of the Week!”

Music Video

This week’s music video is Lee Ann Womack, “I Hope You Dance.” The song was the lead single from her 2000 album of the same title, and a number one, cross-over mega hit.

One word comes to mind for me with this song… masterpiece. It is one of my favorite songs of all-time and definitely makes my top five. The lyrics and message are amazing, Womack’s voice is beautiful as always, and the video is very sweet.

“I Hope You Dance” is just one of those times in music when everything aligns together and is perfect.
