EXCLUSIVE: Interview With James Otto

James Otto.

James Otto has been one pretty busy guy the last two years. He took some time out of the spotlight to raise his new daughter Ava Katherine Otto. He’ll be back in a big way in 2012, which is already starting off big for the singer-songwriter: his friends in the Zac Brown Band are releasing one of his co-writes as their new single.

We spoke to James over the phone last week about his plans for the year, on sharing war stories about raising kids with Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts, touring with Reba, his latest songwriting sessions, and how recording for his brand new album is going. Don’t worry James fans: he’ll be heading out to a city near you this summer!

Read our exclusive interview with James below and let us know if you’re planning on catching him on one of his tour dates this year.

Full List Of 2012 ACM Nominees

acm awards

Congratulations to all the nominees for the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music! Here’s the full list of nominees for the April 1st award show. Watch who wins live on CBS from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Reba McEntire and Blake Shelton will once again return to co-host the night.

For the fifth year, fans will select the winner of the Academy’s most prestigious honor, Entertainer of the Year, and for the fourth year, the New Artist of the Year category will also be opened up to fan voting. Nominees for New Artist of the Year were not announced in the press conference today because fan voting for those semi-finalists will close on January 30 (see page 2 below). The winners of Entertainer of the Year and New Artist of the Year will be announced live during the 47th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards.

Kenny Chesney leads with nine nominations, including Entertainer of the Year, a category he has won four times since 2004. He is nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year, a category he has been nominated in nine times previously. He is twice nominated for Album of the Year for Hemingway’s Whiskey, as both artist and producer, and also earned double nominations for Single Record of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year as both artist and producer for “You And Tequila” with Grace Potter. Chesney is also nominated for Song of the Year for “You And Tequila” with Grace Potter.

Jason Aldean is nominated for six awards, including his second consecutive nods for Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year. He is nominated for Album of the Year for My Kinda Party, and has nominations for Single Record of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year for “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” featuring Kelly Clarkson. He is nominated for Video of the Year for “Tattoos On This Town.”

Lady Antebellum leads group nominations with five nods, including Vocal Group of the Year, which they have won for two consecutive years. They are also nominated for Album of the Year as artists and producers for Own The Night, and for Song of the Year and Video of the Year for “Just A Kiss.”

Reigning Male Vocalist of the Year, Brad Paisley, is nominated for four awards, including his fifth consecutive nomination for Entertainer of the Year and eighth nomination for Male Vocalist of the Year, which he has won five times consecutively between 2006-2010. He received two nominations in the Vocal Event of the Year category for “Old Alabama” with Alabama and “Remind Me” with Carrie Underwood.

Toby Keith received three nominations for “Red Solo Cup,” including Video of the Year, which he last won in 2003 for “Beer For My Horses.” He also received a double nomination as artist and producer for Single Record of the Year for “Red Solo Cup.” Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill is also nominated for Nightclub of the Year in Minneapolis, MN (a nod that is not among Keith’s total nominations count, because it is awarded to the venue itself not it’s owners).

Reigning Entertainer of the Year, Taylor Swift, leads solo female nominees with three nominations, including her third consecutive nod for Entertainer of the Year. If Swift wins Entertainer of the Year, this will be her second consecutive win in that category. Swift is nominated for the fifth time for Female Vocalist of the Year, and for the third time for Video of the Year for “Mean.”

Steel Magnolia Breaking Up?

Steel Magnolia.

Have country music duo Steel Magnolia broken up? Their March 24th show at the Greenville, Tennessee’s Niswonger Performing Arts Center has been canceled. The venue’s director started the rumors by saying that the pair are no longer performing together as Steel Magnolia:

“It is our understanding that the duo is no longer performing together,” reports NPAC Executive Director Darrell Bryan. “We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause our patrons.”

The duo is made up of the engaged pair Joshua Scott Jones and Meghan Linsey. They first appeared on the country music scene as the winners of CMT’s “Can You Duet?” in 2009. While there has been no official confirmation of the pair breaking up either professionally or personally, Big Machine Records did tell The Boot that Steel Magnolia is no longer on their roster.

James Otto Spends Halloween With His Little Lamb

Halloween 2011

Here’s one of the cuter pictures from Halloween this year. James Otto, home from spending the weekend filling in for Josh in Steel Magnolia, turned Halloween into a family affair. His daughter Ava, who turned one this past August, and her parents dressed up in her favorite nursery rhyme “Mary Had A Little Lamb” for Halloween. James took Ava on a hayride around their neighborhood to celebrate the evening before going trick-or-treating in Nashville.

From left to right in the picture is Amy Otto as Mary, Ava Otto as the Little Lamb, James Otto as a farmer, and their dog Izzy Otto as the Farmer’s Dog. How cute is this picture?

Adele has one of the catchiest songs of the year, and it’s found it’s way into country music. Reba McEntire brought out all her opening acts on her “All The Woman I Am Tour” to perform a group number of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep.” Watch Reba, The Band Perry, Eden’s Edge, James Otto and Steel Magnolia perform a country version of the rock/pop single:
