Exclusive Interview: Ashley Gearing
Ashley Gearing has a new single out called, “Me, My Heart and I” and was nice enough to answer a few questions for us about her career so far, inspiration behind some of her songs and more. You can also read our review of her current single here.
You’ve come a long way since “Can You Hear Me When I Talk to You,” was on the charts, has your music changed since then?
I think everything has changed since then. There is a huge growth and change that has occurred from 12 years old to 20 years old. I have become more comfortable as a songwriter, vocalist, entertainer and as a person. I have learned to really appreciate all the years I have been in this business because it has taught me a lot first hand. My music is growing as I am growing.
When you sit down to write a song, where does your inspiration come from?
It can come from anything. Most of the time it comes from something that someone has said to me or a situation I have witnessed or experienced.
What is your favorite memory from being on the road?
Most of the time everything happens so fast on the road that you don’t really have time to soak up any memories or anything. It feels like a little bit of a whirlwind. But I throughly enjoy meeting new people, especially the fans. It’s really cool to hear their stories and I keep a lot of their memories with me.
Your new single, “Me, My Heart and I,” which is incredible by the way, just went for adds. What is your favorite thing about this song?
Thank you! My favorite thing about this song is the memories I have of writing it. I wrote it when I was 18 years old and had just graduated from high school. I was getting ready to move to Nashville and was at such a changing point in my life.
If you could be an opening act for anyone, who would you pick? Who would your dream duet partner be?
I would love any opportunity to be an opening act for any of the amazing country artists of our time and feel lucky to have been able to share the stage with many of them. I think my dream duet partner would be either Keith Urban because I love his style, or Justin Timberlake because he’s been my choice since I was 10. :)
How did the song, “What You Think About Us” come about? Was shooting the video for it as much fun as it looked?
I wrote the song about a boy that I liked in high school at the time. All of the examples I use in the song are written exactly about this boy. I was nervous for the longest time that he was going to hear the song and realize it was about him! The video was a blast to make. I have a bunch of my friends in it with me and we basically just drove around Nashville and goofed around.
What are you future plans? Is there going to be an album out in the near future?
Yes! Hopefully very very soon. I have been in the creative process for a long time. This will be my debut album release on a major label so I want to make sure it is absolutely perfect.
I’ve been able to see you at CMA Fest the past couple of years. What’s the best thing about being there?
The Fans! It’s all about the fans. I love being able to meet new people and also see a lot of familiar faces throughout the week. Nashville really comes alive.
