I was one of the lucky few invited to be a part of Blake Shelton’s filming of Invitation Only on Tuesday night at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. Not only did I get right at the center stage, I was allowed to ask him a question on camera. I’m not going to spoil it all for you just in case it makes it to the final viewing in October and November this year on Dish and CMT. It was an amazing experience to be in Studio A at the Opry with a small, private audience with the biggest rising star of country music the same day he earned his first-ever Entertainer of the Year nomination. Let me tell you, there aren’t many out there that are as interesting as Blake is with the cameras on and off.
Blake performed his old hits “Some Beach,” “Austin,” “The Baby,” as well as his brand new single “God Gave Me You,” and two surprises: a live version of “Drink On It” from “Red River Blue,” and his version of “Footloose” among a few other songs. Without spoiling too much, his stories for each song were hilariously him but I’m not sure how much of it is really true (he said he was asked to star in Footloose but settled for the song instead – even doing a moonwalk for the cameras!). Before each fan asked Blake their question, questions that were hand selected by CMT producers, he’d joke with them to make them comfortable with the cameras in their faces. He filmed answers for six questions, and which of them to be aired will be picked by producers. He also had to film “Hillbilly Bone” twice, but the crowd was perfectly fine with that.
When the special airs later this Fall, it will definitely be a must-watch. Some of the funnier moments happened off-camera or in-between shots, and it’s a shame those won’t make it to air.
Here’s Blake’s version of “Footloose.” What do you think?
